In today's dose of good news, we came across a story thatleft us feeling the motherly love and warmth of an 80-year-old woman from TamilNadu.
Chairman of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra recently tookto his Twitter account to share the story with us. He tweeted the video of80-year-old K Kamalathal, the woman who sells idlis to the needy, daily for Rs1, with the caption, "One of those humbling stories that make you wonderif everything you do is even a fraction as impactful as the work of people likeKamalathal. I notice she still uses a wood-burning stove. If anyone knows herI'd be happy to 'invest' in her business & buy her an LPG fueledstove."
80-year-old Kamalathal lives in Vadivelampalayam, a villagenear Peru in Tamil Nadu. She sells idlis for just Re 1 per piece along withsambhar and chutney.
She has been doing this for 30-35 years now. Every day shewakes up before the sunrise and opens her home to the needy people to feed themthe idli with sambhar and chutney. The reason behind the pricing of the idlisis that the daily wage workers can start their day on a full stomach and savemoney for their families.
She used to initially sell the idlis at 50 paise per piecebut as the ingredients got expensive she raised the price to Re 1.She sellsover 1000 idlis a day and while speaking to India Today about her food shesaid, "Profits are not my priority but feeding the people is what drivesme to work." After Anand Mahindra tweeted about Kamalathal and him wantingto help her, Mahindra's Twitter was flooded with people prising him.
